Oh, the humanities! Credits in the humanities will go to students who successfully complete “Taylor Swift, The Woman, the Music, the Industry,” a course offered during the upcoming spring semester at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah.

Taylor Swift. Singer. Songwriter. Businesswoman. Global cultural phenomenon. Stylish and in a class of its own at the age of 35.

And now a class topic for a standard, 16-week, full semester, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. starting January 13.

The class meets general education requirements, specifically replacing MUS 2523 American Popular Music Appreciation. The course will also be listed as a women’s and gender studies course, said Dr. Audell Shelburne, dean of Northeastern’s College of Liberal Arts.

Dr. Alexandra Doyle, assistant professor of music (clarinet), said she will teach the first half of the course, offering “a musicological perspective to consider how Western music history has influenced Taylor Swift’s production.”

Dr. Dana Eversole, professor and chair of NSU’s communication and media studies department, will teach the second half, which will cover Swift’s social media presence, branding and image.

“Swift’s experience as a musician will be discussed within a historical context alongside women throughout various periods of Western music history, beginning with the medieval era” and including consideration of Swift’s own recently completed, two-year Eras Tour, Northeastern said in a news release.

“In addition to looking at Swift’s impact as a singer-songwriter and her influences, the course will explore her meteoric rise to stardom and how she uses her platform.”

Eversole said the class will also examine Swift’s rise to become one of the most celebrated artist-entertainers, looking at her rise as an “influencer” in politics, philanthropy and other fields.

“We are excited to offer this timely course on the impact and cultural influence of a groundbreaking public figure to our students,” said NSU President Rodney Hanley. “The dynamic and interactive structure of the course, taught by our qualified teachers, is designed to keep students engaged.”

Hanley added, “This addition to Northeastern’s course catalog further aligns with our commitment to equipping the next generation of thought leaders and media professionals with knowledge that will prepare them to exceed the demands of the modern workforce.”
